We’re bringing this month’s AOM in-house—on his new release, Valcour’s Joel Savoy offers a view into Acadiana’s own vintage country scene, showcasing the incredible talents of many of his peers who are oftentimes associated more with the dominant tradition of Cajun music. Joel Savoy’s Honky Tonk Merry-Go-Round features well-known names such as Anna Laura Edmiston (Feufollet), Courtney Granger (Pine Leaf Boys), Kelli Jones-Savoy (Feufollet), Chas Justus (Red Stick Ramblers), and Linzay Young (Red Stick Ramblers), but on this recording they are performing classics by the likes of Dolly Parton, George Jones, and Bill Halley. With twangy instrumentation that includes steel guitar, fiddle, and piano, the album lives up to the Honky Tonk part of the name.
Coming from a talented family of Cajun historians, instrument-makers and musicians, Savoy has been at the forefront of the roots music scene in Acadiana since his teens. As a result he has become part of a growing community of young musicians across the country who are veering from the mainstream and making stripped down music with authenticity.
“Some of my favorite memories in my thirty-two years on this earth involve the people on this record,” says Savoy. “I feel unbelievably lucky to have such talented friends and to have grown up with them, watching their enormous talents unfold.”
